Dear Members,

The QTOA recently held its Annual General Meeting, providing an important opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the past 12 months while also looking ahead to the future direction of the racing industry in Queensland.
I would like to congratulate Drue Schofield and Justine Cleary on their re-election to the QTOA Committee for a further three-year term. Both Drue and Justine have made valuable contributions to the QTOA and we look forward to their continued involvement as we advocate on behalf of owners across the state.
We also warmly welcome Sonya Treble to the Committee. Sonya was elected to a one-year term to fill the vacancy created following the departure of former Chairman Gary Cunningham. An owner and breeder based at Mount Tamborine, Sonya also brings extensive professional experience as a lawyer. We are excited to welcome a fresh perspective and new skill set to the Committee table.
On behalf of the QTOA, I would also like to thank outgoing Chairman Gary Cunningham for his significant contribution to the Association and the broader racing industry. Gary’s passion for ownership and strong advocacy for participants will be an asset on the newly formed Racing Queensland Board.
We were pleased to have Racing Queensland Board member Graham Quirk attend the AGM, where he provided members with an update on the current state of the industry, along with insights into the structure and direction of the newly formed Racing Queensland Board.
A major topic of discussion was Racing Queensland’s recently delivered “Next Lap” plan. With the framework now presented, the industry awaits the Queensland Government’s adoption of the timelines outlined within the strategy. There is no doubt the coming years will play a significant role in shaping the long-term sustainability and growth of racing in this state.
One of the key themes emerging from both the AGM and wider industry discussions is Racing Queensland’s desire to generate stronger revenue outcomes from assets the industry already possesses. This includes reviewing and refining race programming within the new racing calendar, alongside a stronger emphasis on night racing, where wagering data continues to demonstrate increased engagement and turnover.
As Graham highlighted during the AGM, innovation will be critical moving forward. The industry cannot simply continue “doing what has always been done” if it is to maximise opportunities and remain competitive in an evolving wagering and entertainment landscape.
The Committee also held an open and constructive discussion with Graham regarding the increasing cost pressures facing owners. Rising training, transport and operational expenses remain a significant concern for participants, and the need for greater support and initiatives aimed at easing the cost of ownership continues to be a major advocacy priority for the QTOA.
As always, we thank our members for their ongoing support and engagement. The Committee remains committed to ensuring the voice of Queensland owners continues to be heard as important industry decisions are made in the months and years ahead.
Finally, on behalf of the QTOA Board, we invite all members and Queensland owners to attend the Owners Winter Carnival Celebration at Tattersall's Tiara Raceday at Eagle Farm on Saturday, June 27. QTOA Financial members receive a discount of $85 per person.
Good luck to all owners over the Winter Carnival.
